Mashed08
I always promise ill keep this upto date and I never do :-P. Just been to Mashed08 the renamed Hack day and as expected it was awesome. Our main project ideas disappeared early on so my team split up to do our own mini projects. I made EtherNoise a tool to turn 2.4ghz amplitude information and make it into rather more pleasant music than I was expecting (binary available in the download section, the source and other details will follow soon).
We also had another play with Nwsr24. Nwsr25 includes my new and improved second gen context engine, Steves OCR enhancements and most importantly a new subtitle to lolspeak converter!. I also teamed up with Anthony from BBC Scotland to assist him with some SQL on weighted tag association for his rather funky flash based iplayer search and tag cloud project.
So all in all a very very productive weekend, anyway im off to relax now, thanks to the BBC for all their effort and hard work, ill definatly be back next year.
Last Blog of the Year
Well in trying to keep up with my aim of at least one entry a month I figured I should post this, the last entry for 2007, its been an interesting year with many ups and downs, but thankfully more Ups. Christmas was brilliant, and things are looking hopeful going into the New Year. As promised a few months ago I said id review the 3G dongle, and its been brilliant, having the net anywhere is so convenient and with the merger of 3 and t-mobile coverage will be even greater. I am currently completely rewriting the photos section so it may be up and down while im making changes but it should be worth it as the new one will be much quicker and use a lot less bandwidth than the MagicMoose one.
Wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous new year.
Chown -R US ./base, VGL Rocks!!!
Hello all,
Video Games Live rocks!, went to see VGL the other week and all I can say is wow, what an experience, the referb at the festival hall is brilliant, and the orchestra where amazing, the VGL pianist has a shining career ahead of him. Who would have thought video game themes played with a symphony orchestra would have been so mind blowing? my initial scepticism has been erased. Anyone who gets the chance should go!
3G Curvey Edges!
Well not quite but they sound cool don't they. Really a mixture of both I suppose, I have now after a number of minor hiccups, grrrr, moved into the world of 3G t'internet. I haven't had much of a chance to play with it yet but once I have ill let u know how it performs.
What about the curvy edges? I hear you ask. The wonderful world of curvy edges has arrived, and with all of 40mins of work integrating the Pure CSS implementation of rounded corners By Alessandro Fulciniti the menus on the right look a little more stylish
Rules for Faster Pages
Me again,
2 blogs in the same month! What is the world coming to. Thanks to the wonderful steve this wonderful guide on how to increase website performance has been brought to my attention, coming to an O'Reilly book near you soon.
Im in the process of implementing a few of the suggestions so with any luck in the near future you will notice some performance gains when using the site.
Have fun as always.
Fun, Freshers Week, Faster Server
Hello,
As per normal, its been 3 months since I last posted, so here I am again. The transition to MetaCheese.com is nearly complete and the site is nearly finished, just need to get round to finishing of the photo site so I can move from the old version. The server has also completed its referb and is running alot smoother now, though the latest version of ubuntu is out in 11 days so lets hope the upgrade goes well.
Uni is going well, PhD is back on track and freshers week was awesome as ever, made tonnes of new friends and scared a few freshers in the process.
with any luck I will update this more frequently in the future.
New Site
Hiya,

Server Downtime
Hi all,
you may have noticed that the server has been down more than up recently, ive been having some problems with the hardware and the virtualisation, these have hopefully now been resolved, fingers crossed. my apologies to the other sites I host.
We Won at HackDay!
Hiya guys
I really must get better at updating this thing. well as many of you will know I went to hackday this weekend, it was an absolutely awesome experience, 400+ geeks hacking away for 24 hours solid. Team Monkey Tennis was my team along with steve, tom and david. we designed BBC Nwsr 24 a system to take the DVB subtitles from BBC News24 run them through OCR, filter them and bring up the most relevant content from BBC News, Yahoo! Maps and Flickr. and to our surprise we won the BBC best tech prize! WOO WOO!.
Thanks again to BBC Backstage and Yahoo! for organising the event!.
Chris.
p.s. my email server is playing up abit at the moment, so apologies if your mail bounces, please keep trying.
Update!
Hi guys,
I always promise to update this more frequently but never manage to. the photos section has been completely redesigned and should be alot faster now and the forums will be backup soon. PhD is going well, over half way now! :-O.
Have fun, Good Luck in ur exams, and let me know what else u wanna see on the site.

Hello All,
Welcome to the new and improved MagicMoose.com V5, its taken 2 years longer than I promised but it is finally here, have a look around and let me know what you think, the features of the old site will be returning slowly over the next 2 weeks so please bare with me while I get the rest of it up and running.

Happy New Year
Happy new year to all, havent updated this entry in months.
Ive been very busy of late, I got accepted on to my PhD after a very long delay, and have been slowing working through my research, im enjoying my position in the SU exec and everything seems to be going well at the moment, got a big deadline coming up, and I start teaching on Monday so wish me luck.
Update
Hi, sorry for the very long delay in updating this, I have since taken over as EO Sport and gotten to know the new SU exec well, there a great bunch and im sure this year will go well, I have finished off the contract for Intellesys and my IFA product Mortgage Watch was launched successfully at the end of aug. My PhD application is currently held in a queue, they value my application blah blah blah, now all I have to do is sit and wait, fingers crossed.
there was a big hoo-haa regarding the server upstream after I made some fairly major network upgrades, the MTU's between segments were mismatched, DOH!. I have a brand new layer 2 managed switch with gigabit uplinks sitting at the centre of the network now, so things should be a bit faster. I have also redone the photo sections of the site to be a bit faster and will be adding enhancements over the next few weeks, mattweb.co.uk has successfully migrated across to the magicmmoose server and has been up and running for a few weeks now.
I have moved into my new house and am just awaiting the arrival of the other housemates for uni life to begin in ernest. Anyway im tired and off to bed. Speak to u all later.
My Life the Universe and Everything
Hello all, welcome to the first in hopefully a long line of mumblings on the weirdness of my life.
As you may have guessed by the site name I am the Magic Moose also known as Jaything to some of my mates, I have just graduated with a First in computer science from Brunel university and am going on (hopefully) to do postgrad research into mobile computing devices.
There are 2 weeks to go until I take over the reigns as EO Sport from my predecessor Rimmer. and now kitty has complete control over the archery club im sure things are going to get a little less normal in the around here (if that is possible)
MagicMoose.com should be going through a face lift soonish as I slowly develop V5 of the site. Please mail me if u have any requests.
Thats it for the mo, more updates soon
The Magic Moose.
